Reading Response

my response I thought the book was very detailed and I enjoyed the pictures. The watercolor painted illustrations made this book. The story itself is sad,
but the illustrations make it heartbreaking. The reader goes from seeing this
happy family eating breakfast together to total chaos as bodies are hurled
through the air and their clothes are burned off. Maruki did a good job of
describing visually how much of a hell on earth Hiroshima was after the bomb
dropped, with the swirling fires of dark reds and blacks. The illustrations
describe the sense of despair and hopelessness that the people are feeling as
their city, and their lives, are destroyed. Toshi Maruki passed away in 2000

Harmonica by Tony Johnston. When the Nazis invade Poland, a
family is split apart. A harmonica keeps a boy's hope alive. The story is
inspired by the life of a Holocaust survivor. I feel this movie was very effective becasue it was written by an author that trully exxperianced this and is a holocost survivor but passed away in 2001
