My story
My name is Mary K Jando. I
was born June 2nd 1995 in
Chicago. I moved to Arizona when I was one so I call Arizona my real home and
Chicago a place I like to visit. I can’t see myself living in the cold weather
they have to experience. I have an older brother and an older sister, we have an
age difference between us, I am 10 years younger than my older sister and 12
years younger than my older brother. It usually doesn’t bother me but sometimes
I can feel the age difference. My parents are from Iraq and immigrated to Italy
then after living in Italy they moved to Chicago and eventually made their way
to Arizona. We speak Assyrian also
known as Aramaic I learned it when I was a baby so it comes easily to me just
like English does. Personally I enjoy school a lot, I think education is really
important and it should be appreciated. When I was in High school I heard about
the ACE program and I decided to fill out the application not knowing what to
expect. When I was accepted I felt
like I have accomplished so much and then when I starting taking classes in the
summer I felt like such an adult and ready to take on the world. Many years ago
I decided I wanted to be a Lawyer, i only knew one lawyer and that was my
parents lawyer so till this day I don’t know how it came to me that I wanted to
be a lawyer. After starting high school I sat down with my counselor and talked
about my future goals, she told me I needed to decide what kind of lawyer I
wanted to be so I went home and did some research and that’s when I made my
decision I wanted to be a corporate/business lawyer. I want to help small
business and work my way up to large corporations. The real time that I realized
doors were being opened for me was when I was accepted into the ACE program. I
consider this my turning point in my life. I have learned so much with the ACE
program. First off I know that college is possible for me if I only try. Second,
my dreams are even closer to me than I thought they could be. Not only has the
ACE program kept me focused and also I feel that with the program I can prove to
everyone that I can become a lawyer and have a successful life.
