I chose the book Hiroshima NO PIka by Toshi
Maruki. What stood out to me the most about the book were the drawings. After
searching for the author I figured out that the author and her husband are
artists. They are known for their enormous joint paintings created between 1950
and 1982 that depict the aftermath of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August
6, 1945. Toshi Maruki focused on Western-style painting and book
illustration. The two artists
collaborated on their murals, sometimes painting right over each other’s work,
creating something quite different from what each produced when working alone.
Toshi Maruki has written and illustrated many books about Hiroshima and the
Atomic Bomb. What makes her such an interesting author is that as a reader the
pictures seem to come alive and the pictures allow the reader to connect to the
story. The Maruki gallery is located in Tokyo and has all of the
drawings by both Toshi and her husband.
